About Laura Sanders
Why I am Running
As a lawyer, finance professional, and, most importantly, mother of 3 elementary school children, I understand the importance of a strong and responsive district on many levels. My family has lived in the district for over 5 years, and are passionate about our schools and community. I see the profound effect of early childhood education, strong schools that focus on the whole student, and the community impact of having a district to partner with and be proud of. Well researched, decisive actions are required to retain our outstanding teachers and staff that support our schools, adequately plan for a growing school population, and making budget decisions that benefit this district in the best ways possible. If elected as a Board member, I would bring my legal understandings, financial background, and attention to detail to make decisions that so intricately effect our schools, families and community.
Goals
- Plan for projected growth and budget constraints
- Work for meaningful inclusion initiatives - proactively address student experiences through teacher and staff training and providing meaningful dialogue in the schools
- Initiate strong family communication, so families have a clear picture of the district happenings and a voice, as well as awareness of available resources
- Ensure teacher and staff support and retention, including opportunities for development and growth - they are the foundation of our strong schools
- Analyze current curriculum, to ensure it is backed by expertise and results, and that we are not just teaching to metrics such as tests and college attendance
- Student accountability - making sure our students are held to meaningful expectations
- Review the budget and expenditures carefully and thoroughly, to make sure that financial resources are used as efficiently and effectively as possible, with an eye towards future district needs
- Maximize opportunities with community partnerships
- Engage with school staff to ensure teaching to the whole student, including considerations of mental health, diversity, and varied post-graduation trajectories
Personal and Professional Experience
Laura is a lawyer and financial services professional, currently managing a team of legal professionals at a large investment manager in the Twin Cities. Laura graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and received her JD from Suffolk University Law School.
In addition to professional experience, Laura has been active with the local youth community, serving as a Den Leader and Committee Chair to BSA Pack 265, acting as a coach and team manager for youth sports, and teaching Junior Achievement to Lakeville second graders.
